What is SafeKey and SafeKey User?
SafeKey is the tool that enables you to access the otherwise protected raw database information for your data. The username and password created using SafeKey is granted read-only permissions to view the contents of the database tables. SafeKey is included as part of the basic product. You can utilize SafeKey access to the raw data via a third-party application to generate customized reports not available in the user interface, create labels, view field information not displayed in the user interface, and so on.
How do I start using SafeKey?
You will need to be granted rights to access the Accounting and/or Payroll data (Administration>Security>Set Up Organization Menus). Once you have been granted the appropriate rights, you will need to select the third-party application you will use to access the data.
How do I set up my SafeKey password when using SQL 2008, SQL 2005, or SQL Express?
The password must be more than 8 characters in length, contain uppercase letters, lowercase letters, and numbers. It cannot be named: Password, Administrator, sysadmin, <computer name>, or <user name>, nor can it contain spaces or non-alphanumeric characters (e.g., #, %, or ^).
I granted rights to my users, now what do I need to do in order to access the tables?
An ODBC connection will need to be established to access the data. For assistance, see the related topic Creating an ODBC Connection For Use with SafeKey.
How do I know where to find the data I need with access to the raw tables?
Use the Default Table Structure listing to identify the table names, field names, and descriptions (Administration>Organization>Default Table Structure).
Can I make changes to the data using SafeKey?
No. SafeKey provides read-only access to your data; therefore, you cannot change or damage your data in any way. Since the access granted to the database is read-only, customized queries and reports need to be generated in a separate third-party software. To query the database, you must either import (for static information) or link (for current information) to the tables containing the desired data.
